Concrete has always been used as a building
material because of its high compressive strength, good durability and low
cost. However, the fatal weakness of concrete is its brittleness and limited
tensile strength. This problem was solved a century ago after the use of
reinforced steel (rebar).Spiral steel is efficient in function and relatively
cheap, so it performs well in most cases. However, rebar has its own weaknesses:
susceptibility to corrosion (oxidation), exposure to salt, corrosive chemicals
and water.Because it is corroded, the reinforcement expands and the concrete
increases the pressure, beginning to crack and peel, forming holes that
accelerate steel and concrete damage. This requires costly repair and
maintenance, and if not repaired, it can damage the entire structure.Numerous
coatings and permeators have been used for decades to help prevent moisture, or
to upgrade concrete and steel itself with epoxy or stainless steel. But it also
does not prevent corrosion in the long term.In addition, steel's penchant for
conducting electric and magnetic fields makes it specifically undesirable in
certain electrical, medical/scientific imaging, nuclear and
electrical/electronic applications.
FRP reinforcement has many advantages in the
construction field.First of all, the FRP reinforced bar will not rust or
corrosion, so it is very suitable for regular or long-term immersion in fresh
water or seawater, such as retaining wall, wharf and breakwater, wharf,
caisson, deck, pile, bulkhead, canal, offshore platforms, swimming pool and
aquarium. Also the immune and other de-icing salt chemicals, make the grade
highway, Bridges, parking structure, airport runway, jersey barrier, retaining
wall and the foundation, shoulder, guardrail, more durable and floor tile.In
addition, it provides resistance to wastewater treatment plants widely, the
field of solid waste, petrochemical plants, pulp and paper mills, pipes, tanks,
cooling towers and other chemicals found in the chimney, and the concrete
itself, alkaline environment.
Another advantage is that the tensile
strength of FRP bars is usually 1.5 to 2 times higher than that of steel, so
this is a good balance for the compressive strength of concrete. It also provides
good fatigue resistance and is therefore suitable for cyclic loading (such as
those for roads and Bridges). In addition, composite reinforcing bars are a
quarter of the same weight as steel. It reduces the need for construction
workers to carry and install heavy lifting equipment such as cranes with less
wear and tear.It can be cut off with a regular cutting tool without damaging
the saw blade. Each truck can carry more fiberglass material without exceeding
the legal load limit. In Bridges and similar structures, high strength - weight
ratios are provided to reduce the size and weight of the entire structure or to
provide greater carrying capacity.Composite steels can also be used in soils
with poor load-bearing properties, seismically active locations or in
environmentally sensitive areas where heavy equipment cannot reach them.
